If your superpower is leadership, what’s your kryptonite?
How many times have you been in crisis mode and felt like you’re the only one who can save the organisation and the people within it?
When you’re constantly firefighting, it’s exhausting and it’s unsustainable for us mere mortals.
It sounds more like the stuff of superheroes. So, let’s go there!
Imagine the next superhero on our screens. She’s not wearing the traditional cape and bodysuit – although she could totally rock them. Her superpower is leadership.
She can do it all, be everywhere, and adapt her leadership style as needed.
⭐She's more on track than a locomotive.
⭐She can leap enormous obstacles in a single bound.
...you get the gist.
✅Our superhero has mastered all of the leadership concepts and frameworks. Her delegation style is clear and encourages growth in others. She is curious and when she communicates, she considers her audience. She builds thinking time into her calendar. She creates lasting, positive change for people and society.
Her boundaries — hmmm, more on that shortly.
✅She knows the value of peer support and spends time with her superhero best friends Captain Catalyst and Northstar. They are a sounding board and each other’s cheerleaders. Captain Catalyst is a great mobiliser; he inspires others to get things done and is always looking for something new. Northstar is aligned with her sense of purpose both at work and in life. Northstar makes mistakes now and then but doesn't seem to be too bothered.
Our superhero has a new virtual friend called Optimal A.I.. He’s useful, fluent and seems to know a lot about leadership, but there are some limitations and she has thoughts about that.
✅Our superhero’s high performing team respects and admires her. Thanks to her, they understand how their work helps them achieve the mission. Their own values are aligned with the organisation’s and those values are embedded in everyday practice. Their roles and KPIs are clear and realistic.
She has totally mastered leadership. In fact, she was recently awarded her formal superhero name by the Official Superhero Naming Commission. She. Is. MASTERY!
But just like any other superhero — Mastery has her kryptonite💥.
💥The System Doesn't Care About Your Leadership Superpower
Mastery has no control over regulation, reforms, sector-wide dysfunction or the geopolitical climate. A brilliant leader inside a broken system can only bend the system so far. Her kryptonite is the illusion that her superpower alone can fix what needs policy, capital, or collective action.
💥A Superhero is a Major Key Person Risk
Mastery is an exceptional leader. Her team knows she’s responsive and reliable, and so the ‘bat signal’ seems to light up more often these days. She knows she’s the only one who can respond and lately she’s been noticing she’s having trouble relaxing and isn’t sleeping well. She starts to imagine a world where she can silence her ‘bat signal’ notifications but doesn’t know how to make that shift when there’s no one who could fill her superhero boots.
She makes a note to ask her new friend Optimal A.I. — he seems to have all the answers.
💥The Absence of Struggle
When Mastery sends her prompt to Optimal A.I., she feels disappointed with the response. The information he has provided is useful. She even discovers a new leadership framework. But Mastery senses he is not like her. He doesn’t really know what it’s like to feel uncertain, he’s not losing sleep, and if she fails it won’t make any difference to him whatsoever.
Mastery senses Optimal A.I. has no skin in the game.
Mastery thinks about Northstar and how she’s always clear on her direction, but that she trips up from time to time. She believes Northstar will genuinely understand how she feels.
Northstar explains to Mastery that the decisions she makes in hard moments are shaped by the mistakes she’s lived through. "Every scar, every recovered failure, every moment I tell my team 'I got that wrong' is where I build trust, and I relax a little more." Mastering leadership as a human and even as a superhero means you need to model both the falling and the getting up, and that's worth more to the people around you than flawless execution ever could be.
Every scar, every recovered failure, every moment I tell my team 'I got that wrong' is where I build trust.
Mastery realises that the very act of trying — reflecting, failing, adjusting, sitting with your own kryptonite - is what shapes the superhero, or mere mortal, doing the leading.
She recognises that in true leadership, mastery will never be attainable, but mastering — that continuous learning and growth — is the true superpower.
She understands that the first step in resolving the ‘bat signal’ issue is an honest conversation with her team, showing more of the human she has hidden underneath.
It's time to take off the mask.
She schedules a team meeting for the following day and feels lighter having taken that step. She’s a little nervous about sharing her vulnerabilities, so she blocks time in her calendar ahead of the meeting to make sure she’s in the right mindset and well prepared.
She starts getting ready for bed, but first, she jumps onto the Official Superhero Naming Commission portal to complete a ‘Change of Superhero Name’ form.
She updates her superhero name from MASTERY to MASTERING and hits send.
She feels her shoulders relax and sleeps a little easier that night.

If your superpower is Leadership, what's your kryptonite?
Can you name it yourself, or do you need someone to hold up a mirror?
Who's in your corner — for the sounding board, the cheerleading, the honest gut-check?
And once you know your kryptonite — what would it look like to stop chasing mastery, and start trusting the mastering?
